Gifts of Hospitality and Generosity

December looked different for our family. Early in the month, Lourdes and our daughter Emilia flew to Peru to begin the holiday season there with family. I continued deputation on my own for three weeks, then joined them in Peru on Christmas Eve and enjoyed the rest of the year there with them.

In December, I visited:

• South East Michigan Ladies Auxiliary at International MBC in Warren, MI

• Bethel MBC in Sterling Heights, MI – Pastor Rick Vinson

• Friendship MBC in Flint, MI – Pastor T.J. Blankenship

• First MBC in Caloma, MI – Pastor Flynn Kettell

• Bradleys Pleasure MBC in Nancy, KY – Pastor Rick Stumpp

Each of these churches and groups was encouraging to visit, and they were excited to hear about our plans for church planting in Utah.

While visiting Friendship, Bro. T.J. and his wife Leah invited me to their home so that he could make me a latte on his espresso machine after finding out that I had been a barista. While enjoying that cup of coffee, I shared with them a reflection I’ve had about this season of ministry and how blessed I’ve been by the hospitality of God’s people. I could tell countless stories of how God has used others to refresh me and fill my cup over the last year as I’ve traveled to many states and shared in many churches. I’ve always been thankful for the hospitality of others, but there is something extra comforting about a warm welcome in the dead of winter. While traveling in December through Indiana and Michigan, I encountered a good amount of snow and ice. I recall on one travel day passing six separate slide-off accidents. I am thankful for God’s protection on the road. I am thankful for the Blankenships’ three-year-old daughter, who told me the first time she met me that she had prayed for my safe travels and that the roads would not be too bad on my way to visit. I’m thankful for my friends Levi and Gabriella Boudra, who welcomed me into their home in Marion, Indiana halfway through the drive and gave me a hot meal and concrete for the bed of my truck to help with traction. I’m thankful to Bro. Rick Vinson and Bro. Flynn Kettell for opening their homes to me during my visits. I’m thankful for the Schneck family in Cunningham, TN, for allowing me to pop in on short notice for a night while passing through.

And finally, I was thankful to end the month by traveling to Peru on Christmas Eve to be with my family. I had missed them greatly and certainly enjoyed the warmer weather.

Not only have we been blessed by the hospitality of God’s people, but we have also been blessed by the generosity of God’s people. We are very thankful for how God has provided for the financial needs of this ministry, but in December, in addition to generosity toward the ministry, our family was also blessed by personal gifts from many churches and ladies’ groups.

We are grateful for the following churches and groups:

  • Landmark Missionary Baptist Church – Bedford, IN
  • Southeast Michigan Ladies Auxiliary
  • Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church – Malvern, AR
  • First Missionary Baptist Church – Buchanan, MI
  • First Missionary Baptist Church Ladies Group – Buchanan, MI
  • Greggton Missionary Baptist Church – Longview, TX
  • Greggton Missionary Baptist Church Ladies Group – Longview, TX
  • First Landmark Missionary Baptist Church - Marion, IN

On one Sunday night, while I was in Michigan and my wife was in Peru, we both joined a Zoom call with Greggton MBC in Longview, Texas. We enjoyed their fellowship, gave a brief update, and I shared a devotion from God’s Word. At the conclusion of the call, they presented us with a very generous Christmas gift for personal use. I am thankful for technology that allows us to connect and honor God together, even when we are miles apart.

After my last deputation visit of the year in Kentucky, I drove to Tennessee to meet Bro. Dale Hamilton, the Youth Pastor at Mt. Zion. He and his wife drove over four hours one way to bring me Christmas gifts from their church because they wanted us to have the gifts in Peru. I am very thankful for that kind of selflessness and sacrifice.

Finally, once in Peru, it was a blessing to spend time with the Cosme family on Christmas. We had a wonderful time of fellowship and enjoyed being together. Please continue to pray for this family and for the visa process.
