Refreshing, Reflecting and Envisioning

A New Year! We pray that you, your families, and your churches are off to a great start to this new year. God was so gracious to us throughout 2025, and we are excited to see what He will do in 2026. We thank each of you for your interest, support, and prayers over the last year—we would not be where we are without God’s people behind us.

During the month of January we had no deputation visits, but we were certainly just as busy. We started the year in Peru. On the first Sunday of the year, I had the opportunity to preach at Iglesia Bautista Gethsémani in Trujillo, Peru. This is my wife’s home church and the church where Bro. Joel is currently serving with his family. This church was started by Bro. Percy Hernandez, another missionary sponsored by Landmark. We are thankful for his labor for the Lord in Peru and the fruit that it has produced.

Over the last 10 years I have preached at Gethsémani and other churches in Peru many times, but this time was different—this was my first time preaching in Spanish without a translator. There is certainly plenty of room for improvement, but I am thankful to have that first experience behind me. Please pray for me as I continue to develop my competency in Spanish. We had a wonderful time with the brethren at Gethsémani and are thankful for their love, support, and encouragement.

Outside of services, we were thankful to spend time with the Cosmes, as well as Bro. Renato and his wife Camila, who serve at Gethsémani. It was a refreshing time of fellowship with likeminded friends, and we are encouraged by their faithfulness to the Lord through their ministry at Gethsémani.

We also set aside time with the Cosme family to plan and prepare for their hopeful transition to the United States to join us on the field in Utah. In addition to planning, we made time for worship together. My wife’s cousin graciously allowed us to visit his beachfront property about 45 minutes outside of the city for a two-night retreat to escape distractions and focus on worship, prayer, and planning. It was truly a blessing. This time connected us more deeply to God and to each other. Joel brought his guitar, and each night we lifted our voices together in worship, singing songs in both English and Spanish. We prayed over the plans God has for our families and opened the Word of God together. The first night I led a devotion, and the second night Joel did. We are very thankful for this time.

After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;” ‭Revelation‬ ‭7‬:‭9‬

I believe that the closest glimpse of heaven we will get on this earth is worshiping with God’s people. I have always found that experience especially meaningful when worshiping in a bilingual context—worshiping the same God, with the same message, in different languages. When culture and language set barriers, the goodness of God unites. I believe it is a glimpse of what it will look like in heaven, when people from all nations, kindreds, and people and tongues” will stand “before the throne, and before the LambWhat a beautiful day that will be. I thank God for giving us glimpses of that here on earth.

This is part of our vision for planting a church in Utah. Many areas of our country have a growing Hispanic and Spanish-speaking population, and Utah is no exception. It is reported that 1 in 5 people in Provo, Utah, speak Spanish in the home. That represents a tremendous missions opportunity, and we want to be prepared to reach them with the Gospel.

While January was not a busy month deputation-wise, God was still working behind the scenes. We learned of five new churches that began partnering with us monthly during January. We rejoice in that and are thankful for their support, encouragement, and prayers for our family.

February begins deputation again. If you or your church would like to learn more about what we are doing and how to get involved, please feel free to reach out. I would be happy to send more information upon request or schedule a time to visit in person and share our burden. Please continue to pray for our safety as we travel and present our work. Pray for our continued preparations for the field in Utah, and please pray that God would prepare hearts for the Gospel.
